North East Workers On Organic Farms (NEWOOF)
NEWOOF is a regional Farm Apprenticeship Placement Service. Sponsored by the New England Small Farm Institute, and coordinated from their offices in Massachusetts, NEWOOF annually publishes an annotated list of farms (generally in the Northeast) seeking apprentices.(see below) The list is made available to interested workers who are responsible for contacting the farm(s) of their choice, and directly arranging for interviews.
The spectrum of possible apprenticeship arrangements is broad. Each year, over 70 farms are listed, offering opportunities for anything from full-time, live-in arrangements to weekend commuting, in exchange for room, board, crop share, or wages. An apprenticeship may last anywhere from a week to a full year or more. Each farm is unique, and apprenticeships are flexible. Level of training, labor requirements, and extra educational and recreational opportunities are all worked out individually between farmers and apprentices.
The Farm List (View online below) is published annually in mid-January, with updates in February and May if needed. The deadline for listing your farm in the first issue of the Farm List is December 15. Requests to be included in an update will be accepted until April 31. Apprentice requests are accepted year-round. (If you are requesting a Farm List in the second half of the calendar year, please specify whether you would like the current year's List or the upcoming List.) Please note that NEWOOF does not publish a national list, nor does it place international workers.
