01 - This farm is involved in organic veggies, logging/forestry, a goat dairy for raw milk, and pasture-raised poultry.

Chores consist of cultivating, planting, feeding and watering animals, harvesting vegetables, farmers’ markets, milking, sales, cheesemaking, forestry work, and collecting eggs.  Special projects may include building various shelters and clearing land.

We’re looking for one or two apprentices from May through September.

We prefer someone local, but for the right person we have a guest room in our farmhouse, and couples may be accommodated.

This is a chance to learn animal husbandry, goat cheese making, milking and machine maintenance.  There is swimming, hiking and fishing nearby.

02 - This is a 120-acre farm raising pastured poultry, chickens, turkeys, eggs, beef, pork, produce and tree fruit.

Jobs to be done include: daily care of livestock and fruit/vegetable crops, planting and harvesting of vegetbles, high-tunnel operations, marketing duties through farmers’ markets and restaurants, etc.

We need two apprentices from 4/1/10 to mid-October.

The farm is immediately next to the Alleghany National Forest and near several beautiful state parks and gamelands. Hiking, hunting, fishing and camping are all easily available.

03 - Started as an organic farm in 1972, we grow vegetables, fruit and Christmas trees on 60 acres, providing sustainably-grown food to mixed-income neighbors at reasonable prices.

Work to be done includes:  starting seeds, planting, weeding, plasticulture use, pruning apple and pear trees, working with Christmas trees, harvesting, packing, marketing at farmers’ markets, assisting with tours of the farm.  To learn more, see articles by farmworkers at http://www.takoma.com/archives/copy/2003/05/farmworker.html.

We need two apprentices 5/1-8/1 and two apprentices 8/1-11/1 to be paid $1500 including room and board, or 5/1-11/1 for $4,000 including room and board.  Full-term employees last year netted $7,000+.  Workers decide on hiring (and firing), hours, etc.

Accommodations include new house and two new cabins with modern bathrooms and kitchen; everyone has his/her own room.

Apprentices get 1 1/2 days off.  There are great opportunities for hiking and biking; the C&O canal is ten miles away.  We are situated in a rural area two hours from Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburgh.  The river through the farm is swimmable and the surrounding area is undeveloped and beautiful.01
