About New Farmers
New or beginning farmers are a diverse group. They include young people just out of college, but also "career changers" of all ages, individuals newly retired or planning for retirement, and immigrants. While some new farmers did grow up on a farm, and/or may be taking over a farm business from a family member, increasingly beginning farmers come from non-farm backgrounds. Meeting the needs of new farmers with such differing backgrounds can be a challenge for service providers. Understanding who they are is an important first step.
Service providers and farmers who participated in the Growing New Farmers Project researched a number of questions about the next generation of farmers in the Northeast. The information has been updated as appropriate.
